Design of the Week - Movie Flipboard

Silhouette Flipbook Using Free Shape of the Week, Admit One Movie Ticket Design by Nadine Muir from Craft Chatterbox Blog for Silhouette UK Blog

Hello, Nadine here with a tutorial for this week's Free Design, which is a vintage style set of 'Admit One' tickets.  I thought they would make a nice invitation to a movie night.  Vintage movies reminded me of the flipbooks we used to make as kids to animate a little stick men running.  The thought filled me with such nostalgia, I thought it would be cute to make a flipbook using Silhouette to spell out the message 'Lights, Camera, Action It's Movie Time'.

I spelt out one letter at a time and also had the camera reels spinning.  Here's a video of the final result:

What you’ll need:

STEP ONE: Prepare Film Camera

We want the film reels to spin, so ungroup design ID 12560.  Select the 6 triangular segments of the first film reel and group.  Similarly group the 6 segments of the second reel. Select all other shapes.  A wee tip here, is that I find it easier to simply select all, then deselect the reels, by clicking on them with the shift key held down.  Convert the remaining shapes into a compound path.  I was very
intimidated by compound paths when I first started using Silhouette Studio, but it's nothing to fear.  I just makes internal shapes appear as holes so that fill colour works as you'd like.

Scale the camera to 33% smaller.

STEP TWO: Make Flip Book Template.

Make a round edge rectangle 13.5cm wide and 5.5cm tall.  Place the camera in the centre of the rectangle and add a rounded 5cm square to the right.  Add text in 35pt using the LW Stars Font.  Depending on how you will fasten the flipbook, you may need some hole punches at the left-hand side.
Right-click and 'Ungroup' the text.  This will convert the text to a regular shape and lock the letters in place.

STEP THREE: Page and Cut Settings

Only the outside edge, the hole punches and the reels are to be cut.  Control this using the cut settings menu by setting the other shapes to 'No Cut'.  Set your page to be A4 landscape, with registrations marks.

STEP FOUR: Layout Flip Book

Replicate the template so there are 6 on a page.  Delete the text so that it spells out one letter at a time.

STEP FIVE: Rotate Reel

Rotate each of the reels by 5 degrees more for each page

STEP Six: Make Cover

Take the two tickets from this week's free file and fill the background black.  For the 'admit one' image, we want this to be white, so set brightness to 100% using the Effects window.  Group this shape with the outside ticket shape and resize to 2cm tall (maintain ratio).  Add the text 'You're Invited To' above the tickets and 'Movie Night' below.  Remember to set all these shapes to 'No Cut' so that they are printed but only the outside rectangle and punch holes are cut.

Using the Silhouette Pen Holder

Hello! Bev here with a tutorial on how to use the Silhouette Pen Holder to create projects that you can use for cards, invitations, thank you cards and much more.  The great thing about the pen holder is that you can use almost any pen!

What you will need:
  • Silhouette Pen Holder
  • Silhouette Cameo/Portrait
  • Pens
  • Cardstock
Step One:

Begin with a new file in your silhouette studio and choose what you would like your design to be.  I decided on a card for our good friends little boy, and his upcoming celebration.

I filled the colour of the text on the screen as I wanted to get an idea of how it would look once it was drawn.

Step Two:

Setting up the pen holder.  It looks complex but is quite simple once you recognise what each part does.  The pack comes with 3 different sized pen grips.  Small, Medium and Large.  Small would be for your thinner pens, for example the staedtler fineliners, the medium for most gel pens and biros, and large for marker pens such as sharpies.  You will get a good idea of what size you need by having a play around with the different grips.
There is also the actaul part of the pen holder which sits in your machine like a blade would.  I found the best way of setting this up was to, firstly put the grip on the pen

Next, slip the pen into the holder until it reaches the end of the lid and then screw into place.  Hold on to both of the elements until it is secure to prevent slippage.

Once the grip is screwed onto the pen holder, remove the cap at the end and the nib will be in the correct place.

(excuse the blurry image on this picture, I was trying to get a little too close I think)

Next, load the pen holder into your machine.

Load your cardstock onto the mat and go back to your computer.  You will need to select sketch pens in the cut settings section of the program.  If you would like to use more than one colour on your design, this is quite simple to do.  Just ensure that the part you would like to sketch is set to 'cut', and all other parts are set to 'no cut'.  Once the first part is complete, do not remove the card from the mat, or unload the mat.  Simply go back to your screen and set the already sketched parts to 'no cut' and 'cut' the next part of your design.

Once the design has been completed, you can unload the mat and remove your design.

I used uni ball signo gelstick 0.7 and they worked out great for my project.

And this was the finished result!

I really enjoyed sharing this walk through of the pen holder with you and look forward to sharing again soon!

Dinosaur rhinestone tshirt

My daughter is a bit of a dinosaur fan, and as there is rarely any tops with dinosaur for girls out there (how can girls like dinosaur?? outrageous!) I wanted to make her a rhinestone dinosaur with vinyl writing. Hope you enjoy this tutorial!

Supplies needed:

Rhinestones
Rhinestone Starter kit
T-shirt
Iron
Heat Transfer Vinyl in white
DINOSAUR SET Design (ID #23556)
LD DELIGHTFUL FONT  (ID #41535)

1. Preparing the dinosaur rhinestone design:

The dinosaur design comes in 4 designs. I wanted to use only one of them, ungroup and delete the ones that you don't want to work with.

  • Resize the dinosaur to fit the template paper size. I put the page settings as A4, landscape.

  • To turn the dinosaur into rhinestone design. Choose the rhinestone option

  • Choose rhinestone effect to edge, and rhinestone size to 16 ss (this is the size of the rhinestones I had.)

  • Set your cutting settings to rhinestone template material, I found out I needed to increase the cutting blade setting to 7 instead of 6 though. But do a test cut before you send the file to your silhouette and see what works best for you.
  • Your design is ready to send to your silhouette.

2. Preparing the text:

  • Choose the Ld Delightful font, and write RAWR. Resize it to the size you want it to be cut and mirror to your left. Delete the original and fit to fit on your page.
  • Set your cut settings to heat transfer material, smooth. When putting the vinyl to your mat, make sure you put the right side to cut, so its the vinyl thats being cut instead of the transfer paper!
  • Your design is ready to be sent to your silhouette.

3. Cutting and assembling your rhinestone design:

  • Once yo've cut your dinosaur design on the template material, you can remove it from its backing (you might have to remove some of the holes with your weeding tool.)
  • Put your template on the provided backing from your template kit, and use your brush tool to spread the rhinestone in its place on the design.

  • Once you're done, use the transfer paper provided in the kit to transfer it from the template to the t-shirt. Iron it on your t-shirt. And its done!

4. Cutting and assembling your vinyl text:

  • After you've cut your design, use the weeding tool, remove the extra bits of vinyl.
  • Place your text on your t-shirt and position it where you desire to have it ironed.
  • Iron it on or use a heat press to attach it to your t-shirt.
And this is the end result. An adorable tshirt for every dinosaur loving child (or grown up!) out there.
